Review: Kitchen Nightmares USA episode 2: Dillon’s
The second episode of the US version of Kitchen Nightmares takes place at Dillon’s. You might remember that name from a while back, when Gordon was sued by Martin R. Hyde, at that time the restaurant manager of Dillon’s. It is going to be very clear why he was sued, but I’ll get back to that later.
SPOILERS HEREAFTER
Day 1: Gordon arrives. He is greeted by 3 different managers, one of them is Martin. Gordon sits down and orders a few dishes from both the American-style and Indian-style menu. Surrounded by flies he actually tastes some of the garbage that is served. Ironically, he asks for a clean plate to put his (rotten) food on. When the last dish arrives, Gordon does something really smart, and has the chef that cooked the dish sit down and eat what he sent out.
At dinner service Gordon finds out there are just too many managers doing nothing. The kitchen is in complete chaos and something has to happen.
Day 2: Kitchen investigation. This part of the programme was clearly not made for viewers with a weak stomach. All the food that’s stored is rotten and moldy. Flies, cockroaches, rats, … if you are about to watch this, you can’t prepare for what is coming, and there are no words to describe it. The kitchen is closed and Gordon tells the staff to inform the guests that they won’t be served any food tonight: “It’s the luckiest day of their lives”. And I must admit, I think Gordon might have actually saved a few lives here!
Day 3: Gordon brings in a cleaning team, and together with the staff, they steam-clean the whole place. Although I must say, it would’ve been better burning it down to the ground and rebuilding it. The staff is then taken to Gordon’s New York restaurant, “London” to have them see what a real kitchen looks like.
Gordon revises the menu. and everything is being prepared for a relaunch.
Day 4: Outside and inside of the restaurant received an overnight makeover courtesy of Gordon’s team, and the restaurant is renamed to Purnima. An Indian chef is brought in by Gordon to overhaul the food, and help the kitchen produce the food. Just before the relaunch Gordon tells manager Martin what a worthless piece of shit he is, and it almost comes to an arguement.
Day 5: The restaurant has relaunched after some promotion-stunts, and everything seems to be working out just fine. Looks like the restaurant is saved. However, Gordon tells the owner, he thinks Martin is responsible for the mess he saw, and that Martin does not pull his weight (by far). Martin overhears this and an arguement breaks out. Martin quits his job in anger. It is obvious that Martin had a great deal in the mess that Gordon found in the beginning, and anyone that was part of it would/should be very very emberassed about it. So this led to the lawsuit, of which this quote of Gordon’s sums it up: “There’s a man who got very scared and very embarrassed about his lack of professionalism.”
